Choosing a trip

Is Dakhla right for you? The honest version

3 min read ZoraSurf

Forty kilometres of flat water and 300+ windy days — and no nightlife, no old town, and nothing to do when the wind drops.

Most pages about Dakhla read like a brochure. This one is written to talk some people out of going, because a Dakhla trip is superb for the right person and a long, expensive disappointment for the wrong one.

What Dakhla actually is

A sand peninsula in the Western Sahara, with a forty-kilometre lagoon of flat, shallow water on one side and the Atlantic on the other. Over 300 windy days a year. Season from March to November. Steady thermal wind that builds through the afternoon rather than gusting unpredictably.

For learning to kitesurf, or for riding flat water at speed, there are very few places on earth that compete.

The part the brochures skip

There is nothing to do except kite.

No nightlife. No old town. No medina, no bars worth the name, no museums, no beach cafés to drift between. The camps sit on a lagoon shore a few hundred kilometres from anything else, and the day has one activity in it.

There are dune trips, the white dune, oyster farms and hot springs — genuinely worth doing once. They are not a week's worth of alternatives.

Getting there costs you two days. No direct flights from Europe, infrequent connections, a full travel day each way.

The evenings are cold. People consistently under-pack.

The accommodation is simple on the lagoon camp. That is the trade for being twenty metres from the water.

Who should absolutely go

  • You want to learn to kitesurf properly. Flat, shallow, standable water and steady wind is the fastest and least frightening way to learn, and the 9 to 10 hours in our camp packages are built around that.
  • You are an intermediate who wants to nail something specific. A first jump, riding toeside, going strapless. The consistency here means real repetition instead of waiting for conditions.
  • You want to switch off. The isolation is the product. A week with one thing to do and no reason to look at your phone is genuinely restorative.
  • You ride flat water for speed or freestyle. The Speed Spot is one of the flattest patches of water anywhere.

Who should go somewhere else

  • You want a holiday with kiting in it. Go to Essaouira. Trade wind almost every afternoon, a UNESCO medina, a port, restaurants, and an easy journey from Europe.
  • You are travelling with someone who does not kite. They will be bored by day three, and no amount of dune trips fixes that. This is the single most common way a Dakhla trip goes wrong.
  • You have four days or fewer. Two of them are travel.
  • You want nightlife. There is none. This is not a matter of finding the right spot.

Which package suits which person

Lagoon camp — most sociable, all meals included, closest to the water, simplest rooms. Best for solo travellers and anyone who wants the full immersion.

Private apartment — own kitchen, own space, airport transfers included. Best for couples, families and longer stays.

Hotel — daily breakfast, welcome dinner, transfers, and a comfortable room to come back to. Best if you want the riding without the roughing it.

The honest summary

Dakhla is not a destination. It is a training ground with somewhere to sleep attached, and it is one of the best in the world at being exactly that.

If that sounds like a criticism, Essaouira is your trip. If it sounds like the point, book the week — and book six days or more so the travel is worth it.

Not sure which? Message us with what you want out of the week. We would rather send you to the right place than fill a bed.
