About the Camp

Wind Every
Afternoon

The Alizé blows side-onshore into the bay almost every afternoon between April and October. Mornings are for theory, gear setup and — if the swell is up — a surf session; afternoons are for the water, three hours at a time.

The eight-day camp carries twelve hours of IKO coaching, which is where most riders get comfortably upwind. Four and six-day camps run eight and ten hours.

What do the Essaouira kitesurf camps cost and how long are they?
Four days with 8 hours of IKO coaching from €270 per person, six days with 10 hours from €410, eight days with 12 hours from €540. Group, semi-private and private coaching are priced separately.
How many hours of kitesurfing do I actually get?
8, 10 or 12 hours depending on the camp length. The IKO recommends 9 to 12 hours before independent riding, so the six and eight-day camps are the ones sized to leave you riding.
Is the team dinner included?
Yes — a team dinner on the final day is part of the kitesurf camp. Daily breakfast at the riad is included too; lunches and other dinners are not.
Where do I stay on this camp?
The same traditional riad as our surf camp, about seven minutes from the beach, with breakfast every morning. Your coaching format changes the price; the room does not.
When are the kite sessions scheduled?
Afternoons, because that is when the trade wind fills in. Mornings are for theory, gear setup and rest — or a surf session if the swell is up and you want to add one.
Will I be riding by the end of the camp?
On the eight-day camp with 12 hours, most people are riding and many are getting back upwind. On the four-day camp with 8 hours, expect to be water-starting rather than cruising. Progress varies more between people than between camps.
Is the bay safe for a beginner kiter?
It is one of the safer configurations you can learn in — a wide sandy bay with side-onshore wind, which pushes you back towards the beach rather than out to sea. That is why beginners are taught here rather than on an offshore spot.
What equipment do I get?
Kite, bar, board, harness, wetsuit, helmet and impact vest for the whole camp, sized to you and the day's conditions. Nothing to bring and nothing to rent separately.
Which months should I book?
April to October, when the trade wind is strongest and most reliable. July and August are the windiest. May and September are the pick if you also want to surf while you are here.
Is there an IKO card at the end?
Ask your instructor to log your progression during the camp. Formal IKO certification is included in our Dakhla packages; here it depends on the level you reach and how far you get through the syllabus.
What if the wind does not blow?
Your hours move to another day of the camp rather than being lost. That flexibility is one of the practical arguments for a multi-day camp over individually booked sessions.
Can a non-kiting partner come along?
Yes, booking the accommodation without the coaching, and Essaouira is the best of our locations for that. There is a whole walled town to enjoy while you are on the water.
