the Ramparts

Essaouira's huge bay works best in the morning, before the famous trade wind gets to work. The waves are sandy-bottomed and forgiving, and the whole line-up sits in front of the old Portuguese ramparts — it is probably the most photogenic beginner spot in the country.

When the bay goes flat, Sidi Kaouki twenty-five kilometres south picks up nearly twice the swell. Our coaches make that call each morning.

How much do surf lessons in Essaouira cost?
Group lessons run €20 for 2h, €45 for 4h, €70 for 6h, €85 for 8h and €105 for 10h per person. Semi-private goes from €35 to €140, private from €55 to €180. The 10-hour block is sold in the group format only.
Will the wind ruin my surf lesson?
Not if you come in the right season and surf in the morning. Essaouira's trade wind builds through the afternoon, so surf sessions are planned early. From September to April the swell is consistent and the mornings are clean.
Why do you drive to Sidi Kaouki?
Because on a lot of days it is simply the better wave. The town beach is sheltered and ideal for first sessions, but Sidi Kaouki picks up cleaner, more consistent Atlantic swell. Transport to the spot of the day is included in the price.
Is Essaouira bay good for a first-ever surf?
It is one of the best beginner beaches in Morocco — a wide sandy bay, gentle whitewater and shallow water a long way out, right under the medina walls. It is where every first session starts.
What wetsuit will I be given?
Whatever the water needs on the day. Essaouira runs cooler than Agadir, roughly 16 to 20 °C through the year, so expect a full suit for most of the season and a shorty at the tail end of summer. Suits, boards and leashes are all provided.
Can I surf in the morning and kite in the afternoon?
In May and September, genuinely yes — that is what makes those two months special here. In midsummer the wind is too strong for good surf; in midwinter it is often too light to kite reliably.
How many students per instructor?
Four in a group lesson, two in semi-private, one in private. Small numbers matter more in a beach break than anywhere, because your coach has to keep eyes on everyone in moving water.
Do you teach children?
From around age 8. Essaouira bay suits young surfers well — the water is shallow, the whitewater is gentle and there is a whole town to do something else in when they have had enough.
What if I only have one day in Essaouira?
Take a two-hour group session in the morning. You will not leave a surfer, but you will catch waves on a beautiful beach under the ramparts, and you will know whether to come back for a week.
Do I need to book in advance?
In summer, yes — the town is busy and instructors get committed early. Out of season a day or two ahead is usually enough. Message us with your dates and we will tell you honestly how full we are.
Are photos of my session included?
Photos are available on request at no charge. Ask your coach at the start of the session rather than the end so they can plan for it.
What languages do your coaches speak?
English, French and Arabic, and often Spanish or German depending on who is teaching that week. Tell us your preference when you book.
